Dazz Band

The Main Stage

The Dazz Band was the first R & B Group to win a Grammy out of Cleveland, Ohio for Best Performance by a Group or Duo with their smash hit “Let It Whip” in 1982 during their time with Motown. That same year Cleveland’s Mayor George Voinovich honored the group by designating December 31st “Bobby Harris and The Dazz Band Day.” While most known for “Let it Whip”, The Dazz Band also scored 20 Hits on the Top 100 & R & B Charts from 1980-1998 Produced by Reggie Andrews and Leader Bobby Harris. The Dazz Band performed on popular television shows of the 80’s and 90’s including Soul Train, Solid Gold, & American Bandstand. In addition to “Let It Whip”, high energy hits such as “Swoop”, “Joystick”, “Party Right Here”, “Let It All Blow”, “Keep It Live” and classic ballads revered by fans like “Knock Knock”, “Heartbeat”, “Don’t Gamble (With My Love)” & “When You Needed Roses” have sustained the test of time, and remain in recurring rotation on satellite and internet radio.

Following the infusion of rap into the American music market, many US classic Funk/ R & B/ Soul Acts began performing abroad. In the late 1990’s Dazz Band Leader Saxophonist Bobby Harris along with guitarist Marlon McClain called upon members of The Bar-Kays, Confunkshun, Charlie Wilson of The Gap Band, and The SOS Band for a project entitled “United We Funk All- Stars”. Many of the groups re-assembled for the project, and a studio album followed that included the late Roger Troutman of Zapp. Syndicated radio host Tom Joyner served as host for all UWF All-Star Shows, and one common rhythm section was chosen to back principal performers; a new concept at that time. The project was deemed a success, and thousands of fans turned out for the US “United We Funk” Tour. Versions of “United We Funk” were later emulated by Larry Dodson former Lead Singer of the Bar-Kays. Many of the legendary Artists involved would later claim “United We Funk” as one of the most thrilling projects of their careers.

Lead Vocalist and trumpet player for The Dazz Band Skip Martin has performed with the group for a combined total of over 30 years. Skip Martin joined the Dazz Band at age 19, and achieved a Grammy Award for his high level performances with the group. Skip Martin is a MOBO Award recipient who achieved an honorary Doctorate in Music for his gifts both vocally and through instrumentation. Audiences everywhere continue to be energized and mesmerized by Skip’s powerful tenor voice and masterful trumpet skills that make him a musical force to be reckoned with.

In 2013, accomplished vocalist and penetrating performer Donny Sykes was added to the group. Donny is a native of Los Angeles, California and has traveled the world performing in musical theater and on television with legendary artists from Stevie Wonder to Tyler Perry and Beyonce. Along with Harris & Martin, Donny Sykes is featured on 2 new Dazz Band singles including “Your Luv” and “Drop It” now being performed at select shows in 2019.
